University of Oregon Real Estate and Community Information

​The University of Oregon, home of the Oregon Ducks, is located in Eugene, Oregon along the Willamette River. The university was founded in 1876. U of O contains 8 colleges into which it’s organized.  The Robert D. Clark Honors College is the oldest honors college in nation.  The other colleges include the School of Law, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, the College of Education, the School of Journalism and Communication, the Charles H. Lundquist College of Business, and the School of Music and Dance.

The university was originally established in 1872 by the state legislature.  Due to lack of state funds, Eugene residents helped finance the university by holding fundraising events.  In 1876, the doors of Deady Hall opened under the name of Oregon State University with 155 students. Today, the University of Oregon enrolls over 24,000 students from around the world.

The U of O campus covers over 295 acres and occupies 80 buildings.  Being located in the heart of Eugene, it’s not far from many natural attractions, such as the Willamette River, the Cascade Mountains, National Forests, and the Pacific Coast. 

The university is also the home of the Oregon Ducks athletic programs, or just “the Ducks” as they are affectionately referred to in Eugene.  Most notable of these programs is the football team, which had its first game in 1894. They won their first Rose Bowl in 1917 and have played there 6 times since then, most recently in 2015. The Ducks have won a record 13 games in 2014 alone. The 54,000 seat Autzen Stadium is where the Ducks play their home games, and is a major Eugene landmark.

The University of Oregon is also known for its long and close relationship with Nike. Nike co-founder ran in the U of O Track & Field Program under his other co-founder Bill Bowerman, and graduation in 1959.  Bowerman created a revolutionary athletic shoe that became the first shoe Nike produced. The fisrt major athlete to wear a Nike shoe was Steve Prefontaine.  Since then Nike has donated millions of dollars to the University.

There’s also a great variety of shopping and dining both on and near campus. The largest book store in Eugene, Smith Family Books, is located there.  The U of O campus is locate directly next to the downtown Eugene area, where you’ll find no end of specialty stores and restaurants, along with the seasonal Eugene Saturday Market and Farmer’s Market.  Just over the Ferry Street Bridge is the Oakway Mall on Coburg Rd. Coburg Rd itself contains a number of restaurants and stores.  Harlow Road takes you across Interstate 5 to Gateway Mall in Springfield.  And over the Washington-Jefferson Street bridge is Valley River Center, the largest mall in Eugene.

Eugene also has a comprehensive and convenient bicycle path system that connects the campus with the rest of the city and Springfield.  Many students and Eugene residents prefer to ride bikes to driving, as it can sometimes be faster.  In addition, Eugene has an expanding public transportation system, the Lane Transit District (LTD) that serves the campus area.
