Cottage Grove Real Estate & Community Information

Cottage Grove is a city located in Lane County, Oregon and is home to an estimated 9700 residents.  Cottage Grove’s origins can be dated back to 1855 with the establishment of the post office, east of Creswell.  Then in the late 1860s the post office was moved to the west bank of the Coast Fork Willamette River, which is on the southwestern part of the present day Cottage Grove.  When the railroad came through in the 1870s Cottage Grove Station was placed more than half a mile northeast of the post office, on the east side of the river.

The city of Cottage Grove was incorporated in 1887.  However, the people living on the east side took exception to the incorporation and founded East Cottage Grove in 1893.  This was changed by the Oregon State Legislature as they renamed East Cottage Grove as Lemati in 1895, then consolidated them in 1899 under the name of Cottage Grove.

Shopping & Dining

Despite being a smaller city, Cottage Grove has a satisfying array of places to shop and dine.  Shops include  antiques, art, collectables, gifts, clothing, shoes, jewelry and new and used books.  Baker Bay Bead Co claims to have the largest selection of beads and supplies in Lane County.   Books on Main is a bookstore where you can buy, sell, or trade books.  They also sell wood puzzles and greeting cards.  Grove Jewelers sells fine custom jewelry, along with restoration and repair.  Other shops include Imagine it Framed, Out of Eden, Rosebud, and Victoriana Antiques & Costumes, just to name a few.

Cottage Grove is also a great place to dine.  When you’re in the mood for BBQ, there’s Big Stuff Barbeque.  Hillcrest Market offers breakfast burritos, donuts, and biscuits and gravy.  The Koffee Cup is a coffee shop and diner that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday.  Stacy’s Covered Bridge boasts delicious steaks and seafood along with the best martini in town.  Other great places to eat include Szechwan Chinese, The Vintage Inn, Toreros Family Mexican, Jasper’s Deli, and many others.

Parks & Recreation

Cottage Grove is next to 2 lakes, Dorena Lake, and Cottage Grove Lake.  Dorena Lake is a reservoir on the Row River which was created by the Dorena Dam.  Many people from around the area come to the lakes for a variety of water sports and swimming.  Cyclists enjoy the Row River Trail, a 16 mile trail that takes a scenic run along the Row River.  Bikes can also be rented at The Village Green Lodge in Cottage Grove.

Cottage Grove is also known for its 7 covered bridges.  These bridges were built in order to save money during the great depression, as wood was a plentiful natural resource in the area.  Covering the bridges made them more durable and increased their lifespan, which is evident in their continued existence. Even though most of the bridges were built in the 1920s, one was just recently built in 1997, called the Centennial Bridge, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Cottage Grove.

Cottage Grove also offers 2 golf courses.  Hidden Valley Golf Course is a 9-hole course built in 1928.  Middlefield Village Golf Course is an 18-hole course that offers a pro shop, snack bar, and putting green.

Cottage Grove students are served by the South lane School District.
